Airtel Malawi, the sponsors of the prestigious Airtel Top 8 says they want more goals in this year’s competition and that is why they themed the 2019th Edition ‘Wakaaa’.
Wakaaa is a vernacular exclamation of a goal.
Speaking during the unveiling of the Top 8 season 3 at the Mpira Village in Blantyre, Airtel’s Marketing Director Frank Magombo said they expect more goals this season unlike last year which produced 12 goals in 11 matches.
“We noted that not many goals were scored in the previous season. Football is about goals. People go to stadiums to watch goals. This is why we have come up with an appealing theme, WAKA! which to us is motivational and we believe that teams will strive to score as many goals as possible this season”.
“This year will be more exciting. We will be going to each match where there will be lots of merchandize that we will be giving out. We will also have a number of promotional competitions like the ‘predict and win’ where lucky winners will go away with various exciting prizes”, said Magombo.
Airtel also unveiled former Nyasa Big Bullets midfielder, Raaquib Lulu Milanzi, as this year’s brand ambassador and he replaces Flames South African based striker Gabadinho Mhango.
FAM General Secretary Alfred Gunda hailed Airtel for the sponsorship assuring the mobile phone service company that the football governing body will ensure the brands of the sponsors and that of football are protected.
“Football is a game of enjoyment and as FAM we will make sure that our games are violent free and the rules and regulations that govern the game will be enforced on any perpetrators .
“We are going to give Airtel value and we assure you of the best in the delivery and administration of the competition,” he said.
This year’s Airtel Top 9 winner will go away with 15 Million Kwacha, with the runners up pocketing K 5 million while all the participating teams will get a K1 million starter pack.
