UNDER 23 nation team

The Malawi Under-23 national team, which is the Flames reserve, side used to participate in All Africa Games back in the 80's but was inactive for over a decade.

The team recent resurrection can be traced back to 2002 when it participated in the qualifiers of the 2004 Athens Olympics games.

The team was knocked out in the preliminaries when it lost to South Africa.

In 2003, the Under 23 side under Eddington Ng'onamo played against Botswana during the independence celebrations as the main squad was away in Angola for an Afcon qualifier.

The team won 3-1 with Jimmy Zakazaka, Joseph Kamwendo and Gift Makoloni scoring in their debut for the team.

The Under 23 also participated in the 2008 Beijing Olympics qualifiers and after beating Somalia in the preliminary round the team was knocked out by Zambia in first round of the competition.

The team also participated in an invitational tournament in Egypt in August 2010 but were knocked out in the group stages after losing two games to Morocco and Cameroon despite beating Zambia.

The team is also expected to take part in the London 2012 Olympics qualifiers which are expected to start in 2011.

Current players

The bulk of the players are also part of the Flames squad and these include striker Atusaye Nyondo, defenders Limbikani Mzava and Harry Nyirenda and midfielder Bernard Harawa among others.

Technical panel

The team's technical panel consists on Former Bullets coach Gilbert Chirwa and Mc Donald Mtetemera.
