Silver survive Poly scare

Silver looking for a back to back Calrsberg Cup final appearance

Silver Strikers booked their place in the last 16 of the Carlsberg Cup with a 3-1 win over Polytechnic at the Chilomoni Stadium.

The victory did not come on a Silver platter as the bankers had to sweat to break Polytechnic’s resilience in the early minutes.

In fact the bankers should thank the University holiday as most of Poly players looked rusty and lacking match fitness after staying away for so long and only regrouped two days ago to honor the fixture.

The opening half hour was balanced with Poly giving their fans hope that they were in to pull a shocker.

But their resistance was broken in the 33rd minute when Silver Strikers won a penalty which captain Blessing Tembo converted.

The bankers doubled their lead on the dot of half time as Mike Roberts caught Poly goalkeeper Hassan Kazembe off guard to score from almost 35 yards.

In the 68th minute man of the match Thuso Paipi dribbled past a forest of Poly defenders and his goal bound shot was helped into the net by Poly defender Vincent Kingston.

Poly got one back eight minutes later later as the bankers miserably failed to clear a harmless ball in the box resulting in a goal scramble and Davie Maluwa was at the right place at the right time to slot in a loose ball for what became Poly’s consolation goal.

In the other match in Mzuzu, lower league side Nchalo United looked on course to produce a second shocker of the round of 32 as they dominated Super League side Chitipa United.

Nchalo led for the better part of the match through a goal by Tony Bias only for Khumbo Nga’mbi to equalise for Chitipa, who went on to triumph 3-2 on penalties.

Nchalo’s Evance Napolo,  Herbart Biasi and Felix Kamwendo had their penalty saved by Chitipa United goalkeeper Lloyd Munthali while Masa Gome and Mada Chiume converted their spotkicks.
Abel Mwakilama, Edward Chilalika and Mwango Phiri netted their penalties for Chitipa while Khumbo Banda was denied by a cross-bar.
