The Football Association of Malawi has announced that the inaugural Rough Diamond tournament to take place on Saturday and Sunday at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe will be free of charge.
Initially there were indications that fans will pay to watch the six matches during the two days but FAM says it will be free for all.
The tournament will feature four select teams comprised of best players in the four leagues namely Simama Northern Region Football League, Chipiku Central Region Football League, Chitetezo Mbawula Southern Region Football League and First Capital Bank Under 20 League.
The teams have been in camp in their respective bases since Monday and are expected to converge in the capital city by Friday noon.
According to FAM’s Competitions Director Gomezgani Zakazaka the tournament is aimed at exposing Malawi’s hidden talent.
“ This tournament is result of the FAM’s AGM resolution last December that lower leagues players should be given a well-defined platform to showcase their talent so that they can be scouted by national team selectors as well as the Super League.
“We expect all Super League coaches to be in attendance to sign new talent as they prepare for the new season. This will be an annual event,” said Zakazaka.
The tournament will be played on a round robin format with the top team walking away with a trophy. There will be no prize money.
