FIFA in 2009 once more gave FAM its annual grant worth $ 250,000, approximately MK35,000,000.
The funds are released in quarterly tranches and they target 7 pillars set by FIFA itself, namely: Youth football, Men Competition, Women football, Technical Development, Refereeing, Medical, Planning and Administration.
At face value the figure sounds huge but when a range of activities FAM carries out are taken into account, a lot more finances are required in order for the Association to fulfill its obligations.
Moreover, it has to be borne in mind that FAP is like project money meant for specific activities and nothing else. Once funds are diverted and FIFA come to know about it, they reserve the right to curtail funding to the concerned Member Association.
The successes of our national teams particularly, the Under 17 and Senior sides could not have been achieved without sufficient government financial support.
In the 2009 financial year, government gave FAM a grant of K90 million purely for the senior and junior national teams activities.
But with the on going joint preliminaries of the 2010 FIFA and CAf AFCON qualifiers and also the U-17's preparations and participation at the FIFA U-17 World Cup finals in Nigeria, there arose a need for more funding.
To this effect, a further K56 million was released to enable the the senior national team complete its assignments in Angola in January 2010 at the Orange Africa Cup of Nations finals.
With the 2nd funding provision, the total grant from government stood at K146 million in 2009, making it the biggest grant ever received in the history of football in one season.
FAM is grossly indebted to its chief sponsor, Malawi Government for all it is doing to develop the game of football in Malawi.
