The Bingu wa Mutharika cup
For the first time in the history of football in Malawi, a trophy was introduced to be competed by all the football teams and clubs within thier boarders. And indeed for the first time, a record number of 1,028 teams registered and participated in this cup.

The Dr. Bingu Wa Mutharika Cup also known as the Presidential Cup was officially launched on the 10th of January 2009 at the giant Kamuzu Stadium by His Excellency, the State President Ngwazi Dr. Bingu Wa Mutharika who graced this wonderful and historic occasion. The cup is worthy MK60 million.

The competition format was divided into three phases: district, regional and national. From each of the 28 districts,
Standard Bank FAM cup 2009 Edition
FAM successfully negotiated yearly extension of sponsorship of the FAM Cup with Standard Bank. The 2009 sponsorship was increased from MK25 million to MK30 million and FAM is greatly indebted to Standard Bank for this.

The 2009 edition of the Standard Bank FAM Cup was held from the 5th September to the 12th December 2009. The record was broken again from 114 teams that participated in the 2008 edition to a whopping 383 teams that registered and participated in this lucrative competition. As Standard Bank re-branded from 'Inspired. Motivated. Involved.' to 'Moving Forward', the sponsorship package was increased from MK25 million to MK30 million. The bank should be highly commended for being a true partner in making football happen.

The knock-out system added a lot of suspense, anxiety and excitement and was one of the highlights of the competition. The competition was very tight and all participating teams battled hard to win something. Ultimately though, Tigers FC and Civil Service United cruised to the grand final and the former won the Cup 5-4 on post-match penalties, following a 0-0 deadlock at the end of 120 minutes.

By overcoming Civil Service United in the final, Tigers FC became the third team to win this edition of FAM Cup sponsored by Standard Bank after Silver Strikers in 2007 and Moyale Barracks in 2008.
